“Everything changes but not without a reason”
Gertrude Stein (1939) Picasso
The only consistent element in our lives is Change
Looking at how we dress is a way of seeing change.
Even if you don’t think you are influenced by fashion most of us are!
I try to dress and to be comfortable. Not to be a will-o-the-wisp and just flit from one fad to another.
I want to follow my authentic self, but I’ll see something and think: “I like that, I’d like to evoke that kind of image”.
Some items become more appealing; some colours stand out more.
The fit of the clothes seems more appealing and, even if we don’t buy new clothes, maybe we select the ones we have in a new way, with a different aesthetic; revealing something new about us, about this moment, about our feelings, about our aspirations , about our desires?
Fashion houses look to the streets for their inspirations.
They look to the availability of products too, as new colours and new fabrics become available. They are used to produce new clothes, often months before we have access as consumers.
They pay to present their new designs and have them sit in our awareness. To stimulate our wanting.
Back on the street, the fashion-conscious look at each other. The gaze of admiration, perhaps some kind of Peacock rivalry, inspires and might be adopted
The fashion houses and all kinds of visual images inform the creation
Amongst the influences are things like light and its impact on how we see ourselves in the current quality of light.
This production of self is some kind of amalgamation or assemblage of a moment; conscious and unconscious
It’s hard to appreciate the way we are seeing in this moment
Objects and the selection of objects can give us access. Can help us to notice and, in turn, can allow us to pay attention; to be actively listening and maybe to be making choices
It’s a constant dance
A dance that in its earnestness evokes the spirit of the moment
As well as being part of the flow of time
Go with the flow
Resistance creates turmoil.
Noticing the flow of change is exciting and evokes a sense of being in it, being part of it
We move into the Autumn with amazing changes of light, colour, temperature, migratory birds
New experiences
New opportunities
Purposefully explore the quality of dance in your own physical practice.
Allow the body to respond to the qualities of the new days and allow these movements into your flow
Draw on the same felt responses to your dress sense to inform movement
Encourage the body to explore new ways, notice the feel
Don’t try and to explain the reason you change; you already know the answer. It doesn’t require explanation: just allow the change to emerge and enjoy this moment.
